Blocked from these forums on my internet

  • Yesterday I was unable to log into the forums, after speaking with some other folks it seems I am the only one with this issue. Any help would be appreciated.

I tried logging in on multiple devices (laptop, desktop, phone) with no luck. I found (just now) I am able to log in on my phone if I turn off wifi and instead use cellular data, which indicates to me there is some issue with my internet. The error I get is…

    This site can’t be reached

This site on the company, organization or school intranet has the same URL as an external website.

    Try contacting your system administrator

  • @Whirlin

  • This is something on your local router DNS. Did you or anyone else make any changes to your router? You can either reboot it or try and flush its DNS records and see what happens. Basically, something in your home network is either pretending to be or is erroneously marked as the website in your Router’s DNS cache.

  • Coule be a DNS issue with your ISP, as well. Try changing your router’s DNS servers to google’s and see if that helps.

  • Probably help if I gave you their DNS servers: 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4

  • Hey now, there are other people than just me!

It’s known, effecting me too. It’s an isp error that should resolve on it’s own shortly, following up with who we can.

  • I’m having the same issue also. Been working to resolve it, but the combination of using a modem/ router and Charter as an ISP is not making this easy to resolve. When the technician asks you “What is a DNS?” You know you’re in for a long night.

  • you can set your DNS On your windows computer -
    https://developers.google.com/speed/public-dns/docs/using

  • Small problem being, I don’t have Windows. And in part that using a combo router modem is terrible because all functions for matters like DNS are subject to the ISP’s control. So I’m stuck for the time being.

  • Whats your make and model/provider? the instructions are here somewhere.
And you cant change it on the device itself?

  • Motorola Surfboard SBG6580
From what I understand, because the service operates as a gateway, and the router is tied to the modem, as a single unit, all of its advanced functionality is locked by Charter. I did find a very long work around, but I don’t know that I really want to go that far into it, since it could cause issues with my ISP.

  • ahh gotcha. Good luck, hopefully, the records filter down and flush themselves out shortly.

  • What operating system @Alenix ? The link Ordim posted should give you a guided walkthrough for Windows, OS X, and Linux to change your DNS settings on your individual PC until whatever is causing the DNS cache poisoning to clear up.

For anyone else, I’d love to get the IP address of the DNS servers for those affected so I could try to reach out and see if there is another way to hurry up the refresh of the DNS records.

  • FYI,

So apparently the .online TLD isn’t resolvable on Charter DNS servers (71.10.216.1 & 71.10.216.2). Just got off phone with their 3rd escalation tier. Spectrum created a ticket to have their engineers look at the issue and should call me back tomorrow. I’ll let everyone know once they call back tomorrow with what the current situation is.

You can bypass the issue by either changing your Router or PC to use alternative DNS servers until Charter(spectrum) gets their act together. Thanks.

  • I recommend google dns:
    8.8.8.8
    8.8.4.4

  • I recommend OpenDNS and set up a free, personal account to block various categories (malware, porn, parked domains, etc) but I do have Google setup as my backups in case they go down.

  • Have the same problem with my office PC (charter internet).
